The power that fear has to stop you right in your place is phenomenal. Fear is a driving force that holds us back from reaching our potential, from having things we want in our life, and let’s face it.. it holds us back from living life to its fullest.
This topic touches so near and deep within my heart because I lived so much of my life making choices based in fear. I was diagnosed with complex post traumatic stress disorder and if you know anything about this disorder it is a disorder that you get from enduring a stress so intense that it becomes traumatic. The complex part of post traumatic stress is when you have multiple traumas coming from different initiators over an extended length of time. This disorder leaves you re-experiencing fear over and over in your daily environment long after the initial trauma has past.
I’m sharing this with you because I know what it’s like to live in fear and to base all my choices on fear. I also know what it is to move past fear and live a life based on what my heart desires and the life that I want to experience.
Let’s define fear.
Fear is just a reaction to acute stress. That’s all it is. It’s good to know our body is working and able to protect us through this alert system. Great.
But it’s a problem when we are fearful and only reacting and unable to move past it; especially when those fears stand in the way of us making a choice, living out our potential, keeping us isolated, preventing us from sharing our truest thoughts or ideas, or creations. The list goes on and on.
Fear is supposed to be alerting us about potentially life threatening circumstances, not if I should start a business or not, or if I should take a trip.
When we are truly afraid our brain shuts down the thinking, reasoning and processing parts of itself. The only part that is functioning at this point is the brain stem which is our instinctual or survival part. This is why we get that flight or fight. I also believe it can throw someone the other way to hide and avoid. Choices made here are not always rational or logical.
The most important thing for you to feel at this point, no matter how deep this fear impacts you, is to feel safe. On the spiritual level this is working directly with the Earth element.
The Earth element is our protective force that can nourish and nurture our most basic needs. If you are afraid to quit your job work with the Earth Element. If you are in fear to start an online business.. start with the Earth element. If you are afraid to walk out of a toxic relationship.. work with the Earth element first. Or maybe you just lost your job and you are terribly afraid… Work with the Earth Element.
The Earth element tells us to gather the facts and evidence that are physically right there in front of us. Use the tools that are right in front of you to move forward. What is it that you know and can use to get through this? What resources do you have available?
Connect with your physical body through each of the senses. The best way to do this is to go out for a walk in nature and ground. Walking, particularly barefoot, helps release excess negative energy (the residuals of all those stress hormones that your body just dumped into you). Walking also helps you reconnect to the Earth. Hear the sounds of nature, touch a tree or pick a blade of grass. Take in the smells and feel the air. This connectedness helps us to feel safe. I’ve heard of people whom live in an apartment in the city keeping a large bowl or bucket of dirt so they can run their fingers in it or, if it’s big enough, just sit with their feet in it.
Another great way to work with the Earth element to feel connected (and safe) is to meditate! I cannot tell you just how important it was for me to meditate on a regular basis and I would suggest meditating on a regular basis to keep your connectedness flowing regularly. Now, this is not something you want to do in the midst of a panic attack or a real traumatic event. But if you are having trouble moving past the feeling of fear.. Meditate.
There are a few ways you can do this.. you can let your mind go and chant ‘I know I am loved and protected by the Universe (or God / dess) and I am safe’ or you can affirm ‘ I am safe and I am safe to be (fill in the blank)’.
A meditation that I like to do is really connect with my body on a cellular level and listen to what it feels it needs to be safe. I also use a grounding meditation where you sit on the ground or in a chair and imagine growing a root from your first chakra to the ground and releasing any feelings or emotions safely to the earth and drawing in an abundance of nourishing energy.

I added a video here from Eckhart Yoga (make sure she gets credit for it). It beautifully demonstrates the warrior pose series.
Look for evidence in your life that you are safe. Do you have food? Do you have shelter? Do you have money? For many, I imagine money is something that feels scary.. or the lack of money. However, I’m going to ask you to dig deep to know that you have an ability and skill that someone would be willing to barter or buy from you. Do you have things you can sell?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][TS-VCSC-Youtube content_youtube=”https://youtu.be/yfcBgXfKZuU”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Lastly, use affirmations twice a day to remind yourself that you are in control. “I am safe and in control of my life”.
I hope this helps you move through the little fears that keep you stuck. If you have more ideas comment below, I’d love to hear more ways you work with the Earth element to move past fear.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
